Problems in paradise

I've been struggling recently with some events in my life that I've never come to term with. Imagine some of the worst happenings, and you might be close. How do you even start to find a therapist that is equipped to help you with that?

Small businesses

I really, really hate having to purchase items at Wal-Mart and will only do it as a last resort. I am a Target shopper, and more importantly, a small business supporter. But one thing bothers me to the moon and back - getting scammed. I buy from several small online shops and lately, have had multiple issues. One took over 3 months to get my items to me, another sent me a bogus tracking number (bye-bye $22!), and another just refunded my money and shut down. How frustrating! Where is the customer service these days!?

A week later...

Sight is good. My eyes are no longer dry, and going against Dr's orders, I'm back in eye makeup :) I still have 5 drops to do several times each day, but according to the research I've done this is necessary due to the fact that during the Lasik procedure, the laser actually severs the nerves that tell your eyes when they are dry and when to make more tears. So, I suffer on. If drops are the worst I have to deal with, I'll take it. Eye drops are far more pleasant to deal with than a ripped contact or broken glasses. Night driving is still a struggle, but that *should* improve. I have another post-op tomorrow so I'll update more then.

Tonight is tumbling with my little guy (who, I might add, is almost 3!). He has a great time bopping and bouncing around with the other kids and hanging from the different bars. He really likes the trampoline but they keep that mostly put away which is annoying. The teachers are a little prissy - apparently they don't love dealing with a room full of toddlers for an hour.

Lasik... Days 1-5

I finally took the plunge, despite my mind-numbing fears of losing my sight, and got Lasik.

Monday 10/10 - I was scheduled to go in at 7:30 A.M. (which brings me to another point - why in the world do they schedule surgery so early?! I want to wait until maybe 9 or 10 A.M. when I know my surgeon has been up and around, drank some coffee, read the paper and is fully prepared). I had started some antibiotic drops on Friday as a prophylactic measure.

BD was kind enough to take the day off and drive me. We went in, signed a ton of paperwork, took a Valium, and off to surgery I went!

In the surgery room, they had me lay in this huge chair under these massively intimidating machines. Once settled, they instilled some numbing drops into each eye and swung the chair around to the first laser. I'm not going to lie, I was freaking out! They do put a vacuum type contraption onto your eyeball to create pressure (no clue about the specifics of that). When they use the laser to make the flap in your eye, it smells like burnt hair. I do not even want to imagine what is happening on the surface of my eyeball in order for this horrible burning smell to be caused. After the flap was made, they swung me around under a different machine. This is where they put that cruel little speculum in your eye to hold your eyelids apart. Not only is that uncomfortable, but to add salt to the wound, they tape your eyelashes back against your face. They had me focus on this orange light (as much as one can focus with a corneal flap) and lasered my eyeball. That's right - they shot a laser into my eye for probably a good 28 seconds. It is not nearly as bad as it sounds.

Repeat for eye two and I was done!

I literally got  up off the chair and with a little help from the nurse, walked out and had BD drive me home.

Now, they tell you that you are supposed to sleep for 2-4 hours immediately after surgery to help the healing process, but this was obviously a direction given by those who have NEVER HAD LASIK. Along with the 5 different drops I am supposed to use at various and multiple points in the day, my eyes HURT! And ITCHED! And were just overall uncomfortable. I did get a little upset that I couldn't sleep. But I popped Valium #2 and was out until 7:30 that night.

When I woke up, my eyes were stuck shut. After a moment or three of panic, I remembered that this was normal and let my natural tears slowly allow me to open my eyes.

Once I put in my drops I realized something pretty amazing. I could see. Not just sort of. I could actually open my eyes and see the world around me without fumbling around for my glasses, knocking them off my nightstand under the bed and one of my cats deciding that this was the best toy they had every played with. I could really see. The rest of the day was fairly uneventful - lots and lots of drops, every hour and sometimes more. One annoying point - the nurse had showed us some drops and extra tape for the eye shields that she put in my bag, but the nurse in the surgery room apparently removed them without telling me, so I had to send BD out to Wal-Greens.

Fast forward to Tuesday at my post-op appointment and unbelievably, I have 20/20 vision. Amazing! Still lots of drops every hour. My biggest complaint at this point is the broken blood vessels in my eyes (making me look like I'm celebrating Halloween early) and the fact that the drops in my eyes cause the most horrible taste in my mouth/throat after I use them. Seriously bad.

Now it is Friday and I can still see! I actually do have some difficulty at night with halos around lights which makes driving difficult, but other than that I feel 90% better. Slight dryness, some irritation, but I can still see. Priceless. (Just for clarification, priceless does not = free, as my credit card balance can attest to.) I have had a nightmare or two about waking up with my sight gone, and still reach for my glasses every morning, but I would do it all over again if I had to.

The sparkle - to have 20/20 vision without glasses or contacts is amazing.
